In the world of nutrient-dense superfoods, flaxseeds and chia seeds are small but mighty champions. Packed with plant-based nutritional benefits and time-tested by cultures around the globe, these seeds aren’t just trendy additions to your pantry—they're essential components of a balanced, health-forward lifestyle. At Julian Bakery, we’ve embraced the power of these ancient ingredients in our Organic Seed Crackers and ProGranola, giving you a delicious way to enjoy their time-honored benefits.
Flaxseeds: A Nutritional Powerhouse with Deep Roots
Flaxseeds, also known as Linum usitatissimum, have been cultivated for over 6,000 years, originating in the Fertile Crescent region of the Middle East. Ancient Egyptians used flax for both linen and food, while Greek physicians like Hippocrates prescribed it for intestinal health.
Today, flaxseeds are celebrated for their high omega-3 content, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is known to support heart health and reduce inflammation. They’re also rich in lignans—plant compounds with antioxidant properties that may help balance hormones—and soluble and insoluble fiber, promoting digestion and supporting blood sugar balance.
How to optimize flaxseed benefits: Nutritionists recommend consuming ground flaxseeds rather than whole, as the body can more easily absorb their nutrients.
Chia Seeds: A Staple of Ancient Warriors
Native to Central and South America, chia seeds (Salvia hispanica) were a staple food of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. The word “chia” itself means “strength” in the ancient Mayan language, and it’s said that Aztec warriors would sustain themselves for long journeys with just a handful of chia.
Chia seeds are unique in their hydrophilic nature—they can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water, forming a gel-like coating that aids in hydration and satiety. They’re also loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, plant-based protein, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants, making them a favorite among athletes, plant-based eaters, and those seeking sustained energy throughout the day.
How to optimize chia seed benefits: While chia seeds can be consumed raw, soaking them helps with digestion and allows their nutrients to be more bioavailable.
A Global Legacy of Health
Flaxseeds and chia seeds have traveled far and wide, becoming dietary staples in a variety of cultures. In India, flax is often roasted and mixed with spices; in Latin America, chia seeds are used in beverages like “chia fresca.” Scandinavians incorporate flax into crispbreads, while health-conscious Americans stir chia into smoothies and overnight oats.
These seeds have stood the test of time not only because of their cultural roots but because of what modern science continues to affirm: they’re profoundly good for us.

Hello. Is the Flax Seed Granola crunchy or chewy? I don’t do crunchy as I have broken two of my teeth on crunchy granola.
Can your Flax Seed and Chia be purchased separately or are they available only in the granola and crackers? Thanks.
